Casting the Following Roles:
GINO - Lead / MALE / 28 TO 40
Helpful Skills - East Coast Italian accent
Gino is a brilliant, innovative geneticist who has left his Italian roots in New York to move to the West to work on a secret government genetic engineering project. When he decides to use his skills as a scientist to reconcile his tragic past he crosses the fine line of scientific ethics.

RACHEL - Starring / FEMALE / 25 TO 35
Gino's fiance. An attractive, sexy, network administrator at the genetic engineering company where Gino works. Rachel's biological clock is really ticking and she has made detailed plans for marriage and children, then she finds out that Gino may not be able to father her child.

FRANKIE - Starring / MALE / 25 TO 45
Helpful Skills - East Coast Italian accent
Frankie is Gino's distant cousin and best buddy. He's a bit of a slacker pot head but bright enough to hold down a job as a lab tech. Frankie is the only person Gino confides in when the creature is created.

HOFFMUELLER - Starring / MALE / 35 TO 55
Helpful Skills - Stage combat
A Defense Sciences Officer - a government spook (think Men in Black meets the Navy Seals). Hoffmueller is overseeing a classified genetic engineering project for the military, and will crush anyone who gets in his way.

JULIE - Supporting / FEMALE / 23 TO 32
Julie is an intelligent scientist with great respect for and a bit of a crush on Gino. She senses something wrong with her brilliant co-worker.

SHERIFF JOHNSON - Supporting / MALE / 40 TO 65
Helpful Skills - Slight Bakersfield/Oakie or Southern Accent
The smart, kindly, hometown Sheriff starts to wonder about the genetic engineering company that has moved into his little town.
DOBSON - Supporting / MALE / 40 TO 65 Like-able nerdy scientist boss at the genetic engineering company.
AUNT ROSIE - Supporting / FEMALE / 50 TO 75
Helpful Skills - East Coast Italian accent
Gino's blind Aunt. Aunt Rosie show's kindness to the creature that Gino has created. She also listens to Italian Opera and makes a mean batch of meatballs.
Beginner/Intro Class: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm ($55 Day-of)
The intro class is for anyone taking their first aerial dance class with Rebekah or anyone who would like to brush up on the basics of aerial fabric. Spread the word to all you may be interested!

Intermediate Class: 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm ($45 Day-of)
My plan for this class is to pick up where we left off last- we were working on beginning drops! In addition to the usual new knot-move-of-the-day, I am hoping to teach a new move on the fabric, the next easy (hopefully comfortable) drop, as well as introduce you to the "add-on" game that we can play to inspire creative choreography, and help us build stamina on the fabric. It will be a full day!
Please RSVP so that I know to expect you (and I want to make sure that there will be enough people to hold class). Thanks!
DANCE JAM VENTURA PRESENTS

The Art Of Contact Improvisation With Karl Frost
May 16- 18, 2008 in Ventura, California

Contact Improvisation Dance Journey 5/16
and Two-Day Workshop 5/17-18

Contact Improvisation is an open-ended exploration of the physical and experiential possibilities of contact within a dance environment.
ABOUT INSIDE/OUTSIDE: A DANCE JOURNEY

On Friday, May 16, from 7:30 pm to 10 pm, Karl Frost, director of Body Research, will present a DJ’d movement and dance exploration, moving between connecting to self and with other. The participants will use the support of group intention to dive into their personal journey in movement. From there, people will explore, following what feels personal and meaningful. People will look at different dimensions of connection: the body and the play of physics, the mind and kinesthetic poetry, the heart and journey of feeling and emotion. People see how we can meet each other, where our curiosities intersect, and how we can support and be supported, literally and figuratively.

ABOUT THE ART OF CONTACT IMPROVISATION WORKSHOP

On Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18, noon to 6 pm, Karl Frost will facilitate an open level workshop. This workshop is a place for participants to dive deep into the explorations of contact improvisation, and is an organic mixture of physical technique and open questions to explore taking people into playful physicality and self-awareness.

***********************************************

Greetings Friends of Mitchell Park!

in case you didn't know. Mitchell park is in danger of having a parking lot carved into its flank. The senior center is asking to take a chunk out of our park, so they won't have to parallel park on the street. The master plan for the park calls for a community garden to go in the spot that the senior center is planning on overtaking. community support has been great thus far, but it would be great to get those people who use the park the most to come show their support for maintaining mitchell park's perfect character. seriously, it's a rad park, let's go to the meeting on April 2nd at City Hall at 6:30pm and voice our disapproval of putting a parking lot in the park.
hope to see you there.

The movement grows! You are making a difference. 1,200 on face book - 700 in the Save Mitchell Park community group - 600 petitions sent electronically on the WEB from folks all over town - this is more than a neighborhood issue! This is a San Luis issue.

The NEXT Steps are near - we must convene together to demonstrate in unison our support for Mitchell Park. The process from here:

Wednesday April 2 - 7 pm - the Parks and Recreation Commission - Be at City Hall by 6:30
Monday April 7 - 5 pm - the Architectural Review Commission - Be at City Hall by 4:30
Tuesday May 6 - the City Council - Be at City Hall by 6:30

We will have signs - clipboards to fill out the public comment cards - and petitions to sign

All meetings are in the Council Chamber at 990 Palm street.

There will be a Commentary in support of Mitchell Park piece in the New Times on this Thursday April 3. Once it runs we need to flood the New Times and the Tribune with support letters similar to those you have been sending to City Hall. Each needs to be personalized and speak from the heart. The addresses are:

New Times:
Letters should be no longer than 250 words
letters@newtimesslo.com

FAX: 546.8641
MAIL: 1010 Marsh street - San Luis Obispo, California 93401
Tribune:
Letters should be no longer than 200 words
letters@thetribunenews.com

FAX: 781.7905
MAIL: The Tribune - Post Office Box 112 - San Luis Obispo, California 93406

We need to let Paul Brown, Andrew Carter and Dave Romero know that their actions are not representative of the community - you can e-mail all city council members and the mayor at slocitycouncil@slocity.org

Points to be made:
-We need to support the Cultural Heritage Commission's unanimous vote to NOT amend the Master plan for Mitchell Park
-we want to see the community gardens as envisioned in the Mitchell Park master plan
-if transportation is the issue - it can be solved without a parking lot
-the park is an historic treasure
-we need a new and state of the art senior center
-issues that touch your heart

If you haven't signed one of the on-line petitions or taken the opportunity to submit an on-line letter DO IT NOW! Just go to www.SaveMitchellPark.org and magic will happen!

A new 5 week Introductory course to Non-Violent Communication (NVC) will begin next week Wednesday in San Luis Obispo (April 2nd) . Classes will be taught by Dona Wilson and will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 PM.

For more information please contact Dona Wilson at 805-610-8083

Nonviolent Communication is...

Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is sometimes referred to as compassionate communication. Its purpose is to: 1. create human connections that empower compassionate giving and receiving. 2. create governmental and corporate structures that support compassionate giving and receiving.

NVC involves both communication skills that foster compassionate relating and consciousness of the interdependence of our well being and using power with others to work together to meet the needs of all concerned.

This approach to communication emphasizes compassion as the motivation for action rather than fear, guilt, shame, blame, coercion, threat or justification for punishment. In other words, it is about getting what you want for reasons you will not regret later. NVC is NOT about getting people to do what we want. It is about creating a quality of connection that gets everyone’s needs met through compassionate giving.

The process of NVC encourages us to focus on what we and others are observing separate from our interpretations and judgments, to connect our thoughts and feelings to underlying human needs/values (e.g. protection, support, love), and to be clear about what we would like towards meeting those needs. These skills give the ability to translate from a language of criticism, blame, and demand into a language of human needs -- a language of life that consciously connects us to the universal qualities “alive in us” that sustain and enrich our well being, and focuses our attention on what actions we could take to manifest these qualities.

Nonviolent Communication skills will assist you in dealing with major blocks to communication such as demands, diagnoses and blaming. In CNVC trainings you will learn to express yourself honestly without attacking. This will help minimize the likelihood of facing defensive reactions in others. The skills will help you make clear requests. They will help you receive critical and hostile messages without taking them personally, giving in, or losing self-esteem. These skills are useful with family, friends, students, subordinates, supervisors, co-workers and clients, as well as with your own internal dialogues.
press release:

The Hooping Revolution Comes to the Central Coast!

San Luis Obispo, California, February 11, 2008 – Fluid Lüminescence, the central coast's first and only circus arts collective, announces their first-ever Beginning HoopDance workshop, offered 6 times throughout the winter months of February and March.

Fluid Lüminescence most recently performed publicly at the SLO Farmer's Market in 2007, with Chris Williams, Mike Sweeney and Laurie Hobbs on poi, staff & double staff. This winter, the group's hooping masters have consolidated their expert teachings into a 2-hour Beginning HoopDance workshop. The winter workshops will be held at Echo ArtSpace in Grover Beach, CA, where Fluid Lüminescence is a founding member and holds regular practice. Plans are also in the works for more workshops in San Luis Obispo later this spring.

Hula Hooping, HoopDance or just "hooping" as its called today, has had a modern revolution, regaining popularity in the last few years, with thousands of hoopers and hoop celebrities performing and hooping together at music festivals and events across the country. It's the latest fun, full-body workout. A myriad of benefits await the novice hooper, including an increase in energy and vitality, a sculpted and strengthened body, and a renewed sense of balance and well-being.

"No experience is necessary," assures Grant Leonard, a builder from Arroyo Grande and one of Fluid Lüminescence's HoopDance instructors. "I picked my first hoop up at High Sierra Music Festival in 2006, and I haven't put it down since."

"Hooping is unique because it gives us permission to dance - even those of us who don't think of ourselves as dancers." says Laurie Hobbs, another of the workshop's instructors. "You feel like a kid again, and you get a great workout!"

Who is Fluid Lüminescence?
Fluid Lüminescence is the central coast's first-ever collective of circus arts performers and instructors. Offering both live performances and workshops throughout the county, Fluid Lüminescence brings a touch of the artful, the exotic or the extreme to parties, weddings, concerts, special events and fundraisers. With custom-tailored fire performance as well as non-fire shows, the group is made up of poi, staff, hoop, double-staff, fire-eaters, unicyclers, jugglers and silk aerialist artists from all over San Luis Obispo County.

Fluid Lüminescence began coming together in the fall of 2005, meeting to practice mostly at Mitchell Park in San Luis Obispo. Today they practice at Echo ArtSpace in Grover Beach, CA, where they are founding members. The group has its roots in the alternative performance arts scene stemming out of the Burning Man project (www.BurningMan.com), and most of the members participate in the annual pilgrimage to the desert mecca of Black Rock City each year to further hone their arts.
DANCE JAM VENTURA PRESENTS

Contact Improvisation With Karl Frost
January 4-6, 2008 in Ventura, California
Contact Improvisation Journey and Two-Day Workshop

Contact Improvisation is an open-ended exploration of the physical and experiential possibilities of contact within a dance environment.

ABOUT THE CONTACT DANCE JOURNEY:
On Friday, January 4, from 7:30 pm to 10 pm, Karl Frost, director of Body Research, will present a DJ’d movement and dance exploration, moving between connecting to self and with other.

Karl Frost will help participants integrate the explorations of contact improvisation into an open dance context where they start from connection to self and connection to the ground. No contact improvisation experience required for the Contact Journey…just curiosity.

ABOUT THE CONTACT IMPROVISATION WORKSHOP
On Saturday and Sunday, January 5 and 6, noon to 6 pm, Karl Frost will facilitate an open level workshop. This workshop is a place for participants to dive deep into the explorations of contact improvisation, and is an organic mixture of physical technique and open questions to explore taking people into playful physicality and self-awareness.

The technique Karl facilitates involves working from the ground up in contact movement into and out of the floor, weight sharing, following shifting momentum, using structure and alignment for lifts and more easeful flow of movement through the space. Dancers will explore general techniques as well as specific movement vocabulary and lifts designed to open up their dancing, both on their own and with another, expanding into off-balance and inversion. People will cultivate soft power and gentleness in connection, allowing them to increase the dynamic range of their explorations. For beginning dancers, the workshops will provide a sold introduction into some basic technique. For more experienced dancers, they will see how some of the most amazing explorations of contact come from spiraling deeper into the fundamental explorations.

Questions that participants will explore during the workshops: Karl Frost uses technique not to define the dance but to support people in the questions they are dancing. “What feels engaging? How do we meet?” “What aspect of contact is interesting in this moment?” Different questions are explored to expand awareness and the range of the participants’ curiosities. People will investigate the qualities of human connection--the beauty, the play, vulnerability, and darkness. Body work, mind work, play and a fair bit of sweat is expected of workshop participants.

Karl Frost has been teaching contact improvisation internationally for 20 years. This is his first Ventura County workshop, which is being presented by Dance Jam Ventura.

From Rebekah our fearless aerial fairy! Wanna check out what this awesome aerial fabric stuff is? Read on...

***********************************

"Aerial Discount Demo Day"
January 12th 10:30 am - 1:00 pm at Echo Artspace
$25 at the door for aerialists (this class is for current aerialists only- no new students)
$5 at the door for observers

For current aerilists only: If you bring an observer, you get $5 off. (A class for only $20!) Bring someone who may be interested in learning fabric or just a friend or family member who wants to see what you have been working on.

Details: We will warm up in the knot in a performance-based way...creating moves to music as we warm up and stretch out our bodies. The class will build up to a small performance sequence that will partly be given to you, then you get to finish with your own creativity and style. Rebekah will be teaching a move called "the Juliet" that is not too hard but is beautiful so that we can perform without getting too tired out just by learning it. She will also teach a new relaxing sit that feels like your sitting in a swing. J

If you are not already dancing in the air, and just want to come check out the class, please feel free to come watch!

Another Event: Christmas Eve Performance
If you live near Morro Bay and have Christmas Eve open- I would like to invite you to Shoreline Calvary Chapel for their Christmas Eve service 7:00-9:00 pm. It is a traditional Christian Christmas service but will include a 5-min aerial dance performance about Mary's journey with Jesus in her womb. :) If you would like to come and need directions, let me know.

Have a very Merry Christmas!

"If something is hard to do, then it’s not worth doing. You just stick that guitar in the closet next to your shortwave radio, your karate outfit and your unicycle and we’ll go inside and watch TV.”
-Homer Simpson

COMRADES!
Ow-Ow Unicycles was a HUGE success last Saturday!

How do we measure success? Is it by the number of attendees? NO!
(it was 4). Is it by the media attention? NO! (there wasn't any). Is it by the attention the Ow-Ow's got from celebrities? NO! (none of those, either).

Success is measured by using the following equation:

S = H(A / I) = R

Where:
S = Success
H = Hours Spent Practicing
A = Number of Attendees
I = Number of Injuries
R = Actually Rode the Unicycle at least 25 feet by the end of the session

Therefore:
3 hours x 4 people / NO injuries = 100% Success!!!!!!!

ALL 4 OF US WERE RIDING OUR UNICYCLES OUT IN THE DRIVEWAY BY THE END OF A 3-HOUR SESSION!!!!!!!!!!

How impressive is that? Just think, had you joined us, you would now be able to ride a unicyle about 25 feet!

Now ask yourself...what did you do on Saturday and can it even come close to that accomplishment???

If you'd like to redeem yourself, then please join us for the next meeting of the OW-OW Unicycles at ECHO Artspace on Sunday, December 23 at 10am. You'll be glad you did!
Statement on his art of mixing live:

"Music and dance can do so much for the body and soul. I believe music can heal your soul. Tone, melody, and rhythm are so natural. Just like the seasons or even night and day. Everything has its place and purpose, but to me music brings us closer to the creator and that perfect timing. The dance floor can be like a baptism for those willing to jump in the water. I believe art, be it music words or paintings is the creator speaking through the artists. To loose yourself on the dance-floor is to become part of the all. I think if we all remembered we were all one, this world would be so much better."
7pm ~ 9pm
A Contact Improv Dance Workshop
by Leslie St. John and Philip Novotny

No experience required...
open to everyone...

Contact Improvisation is free-form movement that fine tunes your senses and wakes your ability to listen and respond to what is happening in the moment. If you could do Aikido, surf, wrestle and dance at the same time, you would have an idea of what Contact Improvisation feels like. What makes Contact different from other dance forms is that partners are often moving in and out of physical contact while rolling, spiraling, springing and falling. The dance is unpredictable and inspired by the physical and energetic contact the partners share.
